Taleh is home to several historic forts and structures dating from the 1900s and earlier. Of these, there are five forts erected by Mohammed Abdullah Hassan's former Dervish State in present-day Sool and Sanaag. Constructed between 1910 and 1915, most of the edifices are concentrated in the Sanaag region, including Jida Ali, Midhisho, Shimbir Bariis and Badhan. Taleh/Taleex is the largest of the structures. It was built around a collection of Dervish tombs, the earliest of which belong to Sultan Nur Ahmed Aman and Carro Seed Magan, the Dervish leader Hassan's mother. From 1910 to 1912, the Dervish constructed the main fort around the older tombs. They spent the next two years in the mountainous regions of Sanaag building three smaller forts. Taleh has several academic institutions including eight primary schools in the Taleh District. Taleex shares its economic activities with the rest of Sool Region. Primary sources of income include livestock rearing and production, charcoal from burning of firewood, and small-to-medium business-like clothing, food shops and cafeterias. Taleex faces numerous challenges on its economic prosperity. The recent drought and famine which badly affected its population and has driven many pastoralists away in look for green pasture and water for their livestock. The Wadahal-Dialogue Project is helping communities to set up a resource mobilization initiative by forming committees that oversee the fundraising activities and opening bank accounts that are connected to Sokaab Platform. The Project will use the Sokaab platform to track the transactions of the bank accounts and contributions from community members and the diaspora. Through Sokaab, members of the public will be able to access these financial transactions by visiting www.sokaab.com. Community contributions are expected to be contributed by the residents of Taleex and its diaspora. The fundraising committee is requesting the community from Taleex and its diaspora to contribute to the district project where the community will choose the priority project that they want to invest.
