LIVESTOCK MARKET for Beergadid Community
By Deegaan Bile Hirshabelle Project with Beergadid Village of Mataban district
Using a participatory community consultation process, the Beergadid community prioritized the construction of a livestock market. This will aim to improve the local economy as livestock is the primary source of income for the majority of the community not only in Beergadiid, but also the entire Mataban district and other neighbouring vast rural pastoral communities including on the Ethiopian side, other districts in Hirshabelle State and partially in Galmudug State.
Beergadiid village of Mataban district is in the Hiraan region of Hirshabelle State of Somalia with an estimated population of 7,200 households. It lies on the main road that connects Hirshabelle and Galmudug States of Somalia. The tarmac road connects South, Central, and Northern regions of Somalia, including Puntland, Galmuudug, Southwest, and Banadir. Most public infrastructure services in Beergadid have not been established and existing ones have not been upgraded for a long time due to the drought and other climate induced impacts.
The Beergadid community has shown great interest in participating in the Deegaan Bile matching grant project, which supplements the funds raised by the community at a set ratio. The community has no previous experience in initiating and co-financing projects. It is their first time to experience this opportunity. Thus far, communities have established a Community Project Implementation Unit (CPIU) representing the community, and who will lead the implementation of the selected priorities from fundraising to completion of the market construction. For the matching grant through the Deegaan Bile project, Beergadid community will raise $20,000, and the project will match it with $80,000 at a ratio of 1 to 4. The total project cost estimated is $100,000.
The project identification is a decision the community has unanimously reached together with the Government, as this contributes to both social cohesions, and boosts the local economy. The community committees attended the participatory planning process and local fundraising training to empower and transfer skills to the selected CPIU. The livestock market will attract livestock business people to come to Beergadid, to buy livestock for both local and international business. Currently, communities throughout Mataban travel more than 40 Kilometres to access the market and tax is paid to other districts.
Thank you for contributing towards improving the local economy that will promote social cohesion of the district through the construction of a livestock market with the funding from the community and the project.
