By Climate-adaptive Stabilization in Newly Liberated Areas of Somalia’ Project with Mataban District Communities

Using a participatory community consultation process, Hees community of Mataban District prioritized the installation of solar hub for charging their mobiles. This will address improving communication and connectivity of the community to their administrative centre and business in the district particularly the livestock market and the agriculture markets. The community has pastoralists and new farmers

Hees village is in southern Mataban district is in Hiraan region of Hirshabelle state of Somalia with an estimated population of 200 households. . It is 45 kilometers (about 27.96 mi) south of Mataban town. The village participated in the ended Deegaan Bile project funded by the EU., responding to climate induced challenges. Seven other locations also benefitted for the same project. There was no community contribution in their project, community was not able to contribute, the devastating climate change impact weakened their basic livelihood and source of economy.

The Hees community has shown great interest in participating in the co funding mechanism of the project  to install solar hubs. The supplements the funds raised by the community at a set ratio. The community has no previous experience in initiating and co-financing projects. It is their first time to experience this opportunity. Thus far, communities have established a Community Project Implementation Unit representing the community, and who will lead the implementation of the selected priorities from fundraising to completion of the solar hub. For the co funding mechanisms. Hees community will raise $5,000, and the project will match it with $45,000 in the ratio of 1 to 9. The total project cost estimated is $50,000.

The project identification is a decision the community has unanimously reached together with the Government, as this contributes to both social cohesions, peace and boosts the local economy. The community committees attended the participatory planning process and local fundraising training to empower and transfer skills to the selected district project implementation unit.
