CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC PARK CREATION AND WASTE MANAGEMENT IN BARWAQO IDPs OF BAIDOA DISTRICT.

Providing multiple benefits for the city and its inhabitants to establish a formal and efficient waste collection and disposal system in Baidoa.

Using a participatory community consultation process, Barwaqo IDPS inhabitants and host community of Baidoa District prioritized the green recreational public park construction. This will address enhancing the ecological resilience and sustainability of the city and improve the waste management and sanitation situation in Baidoa.

Baidoa district of Bay region of Southwest state of Somalia has an estimated population of 1.3m according to Baidoa Mayor. This includes the IDPS.  Through participatory processes attended representatives from the mayor’s office and all the sections of the town and the IDPs they prioritised two projects, the construction of public park and waste management. For the implementation of this project, the community will make contributions to co fund with the financial support from IOM. The two projects will be very beneficial to the communities, the host community and the IDPs. The waste management will improve the sanitation of the town and the IDPs and while the part will offer communities a place to meet for public gathering, in addition to that, the two projects will also offer employment. The waste management will employ people individuals who will be working in the collection of wastes from the houses to common pit site and vehicles collecting the waste. For the park, few women will start selling tea.

The Baidoa community has shown great interest in participating for the co funding mechanism. They are expected financial contribution for the two project they prioritized. The community has no previous experience in initiating and co-financing projects. It is their first time to experience this opportunity. Thus far, communities have established a Community Project Implementation Unit (DPIU) representing the community, and who will lead the implementation of the selected priorities from fundraising to completion of the two projects. Baidoa community will raise $50,000, and the project will match it with $200,000 in the ratio of 1 to 4. The total project cost estimated is $250,000

The project identification is a decision that community has unanimously reached together with the Government, as this contributes to both social cohesions, peace and boosts the local economy. The community committees attended the participatory planning process and local fundraising training to empower and transfer skills to the selected district project implementation unit.
