GO SPORTS! LET’S BUILD THE FIRST STADIUM FOR THE YOUTH IN GURIE

By Daryeel Project with Guriel Community

Using a participatory community consultation process, Guriel community prioritized the construction of the first stadium in the district. This will address the lack of recreational and sports options for the youth in the area.

Guriel district is approximately 70 kilometers from Dhusamareeb, the capital city of Galmudug State, and is situated along the main tarmac road that connects Galgaduud and Mudug region. It is one of the most populated districts in Galmudug State with an estimated population of 300,088 inhabitants of which 60% are comprised of youth.

Unemployment rates are high amongst the youth, and despite their predominance in the Guriel demography, the youth have no proper access to recreational or sports services.  As a newly proclaimed district, Guriel not only envisions to champion regular sport activities among the youth within the district, but also to invite other districts for friendly competitions. Sports is an effective social cohesion tool that creates a fun and engaging atmosphere among the youth whether within their own communities or with other communities. Sports bring people together, keeps the youth busy, and offers an alternative for idle and unemployed youth instead of taking up arms or joining armed groups.

Construction of the Guriel stadium can be done through the matching grant activity under Daryeel project, which supplements the funds raised by the community at a set ratio. As the stadium will benefit all those residing in the district, which requires collaboration across different groups and sub-clans, the matching grant ratio will be 1 to 4. The Community contribution expected is $20,000 with the project matching $80,000.

The district stadium was identified as a priority project through inclusive Community Based Planning (CBP) conducted in Guriel in January 2022. This process was government-led, and community-owned bringing together representatives from different socioeconomic groups in the community to jointly assess their location including mapping resources, understanding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the community, and to identify the priorities of the community.

Thank you for contributing towards providing access to sports and recreational activities for Guriel communities through construction of the first stadium in the district. This will benefit the whole Guriel community!
