HELP SAVE AND SUSTAIN LIVES: FIRST HOSPITAL IN XERAALE DISTRICT

By Daryeel Project with Xeraale Community

Using a participatory community consultation process, Xeraale community prioritized the construction of a hospital. This will address the critical healthcare needs of the whole district.

Xeraale has recently gained the status of district in Galgadud region of Galmudug State. The district is inhabited by approximately 17,000 households spread across the main town, and a number of villages that are administratively under Xerale. The entire population of Xerale District currently do not have access to health services due to the absence of a hospital. The Mother and Child Health Centres within and outside of town are the main source of primary health services. The District primarily depends on other districts to which the patients are referred, and sometimes patients are airlifted all the way to Mogadishu.

Xeraale community members have attempted to solve this problem and tried to construct their own district hospital. They have allocated land, and through community contribution, they have constructed a permanent perimeter wall of 100 meters by 100 meters in the main town of Xeraale. The construction of this hospital will provide healthcare access to 17,000 households permanently dwelling in the district, as well as pastoralists from other districts. The hospital will also be a referral for all the Mother and Child Health Care Centres in the village under the district. The availability of doctors and nurses have been confirmed by the Xeraale District. Through this hospital, lives can be saved, and the health of communities can be improved.

Construction of the Xeraale hospital can be done through the matching grant activity under Daryeel project, which supplements the funds raised by the community at a set ratio. As the borehole will benefit all those residing in Xeraale, which requires collaboration across different groups and sub-clans across the district, the matching grant ratio will be 1 to 4. The Community contribution expected is $20,000 with the project matching $80,000.

The district hospital was identified as a priority project through inclusive Community Based Planning (CBP) conducted in Xeraale in November 2021. This process was government-led, and community-owned bringing together representatives from different socioeconomic groups in the community to jointly assess their location including mapping resources, understanding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the community, and to identify the priorities of the community.

Thank you for contributing towards providing access to health support for Xeraale through construction of a district hospital. This will benefit the whole Xeraale community!
