FIRST FIREFIGHTING VEHICLE AND UPGRADING THE DISTRICT FOOTBALL STADIUM OF BALAD DISTRICT

By Daryeel Project with Balad Community

Using a participatory community consultation process, Balad community prioritized the purchase of a firefighting vehicle, and the upgrading of the district football stadium. This will address urgent needs of the whole district.

Balad is the second largest district of Middle Shabelle Region after Jowhar District. It is located approximately 40 kilometers north of Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia. Balad district with its 82 villages is home to over 136,307 households as per the Somali Population Estimate 2014. The majority of the population are farmers, pastoralists and agropastoral communities living on the riverine areas and other parts of the district. The Shabelle river passes across the district, dividing the town into north and south, with the north being the most populated part of the town. Under Daryeel Programme and the regional engagement plan for the Hirshabelle State, Balad has been chosen to be the first district in Hirshabelle for the pilot of the Daryeel Matching Grant initiative aimed at implementing community priority project with financial contributions from the community.

The Balad community has selected two priority projects including a firefighting vehicle and the upgrade of the current district football stadium. The first project is essential to fight against the constant outbreak of fires that affect markets and households, and to assist the local administration to provide its people the basic service of saving their lives and houses before they burn to the ground. In addition, the second project refers to the upgrading of the current stadium. Sports is an effective social cohesion tool that creates a fun and engaging atmosphere among the youth whether within their own communities or with other communities. Sports bring people together, keeps the youth busy, and offers an alternative for idle and unemployed youth instead of taking up arms or joining armed groups. Both projects will contribute to the enhancement of the relationship between the government and the people and within the community and the stability of the district.

Purchase of the firefighting vehicle and upgrade of the current Balad stadium can be done through the matching grant activity under Daryeel project, which supplement the funds raised by the community at a set ratio. As the both the firefighting vehicle and the upgrade of the community stadium will benefit all those residing in Balad District, which requires collaboration across different groups and clans, the matching grant ratio will be 1 to 4. The Community contribution expected is $30,000 with the project matching $120,000

The firefighting vehicle and upgrade of the current Balad stadium was identified as a priority project through inclusive Community Based Planning (CBP) conducted in November 2021. This process was government-led, and community-owned bringing together representatives from different socioeconomic groups in the community to jointly assess their location including mapping resources, understanding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the community, and to identify the priorities of the community.

Thank you for contributing towards access to firefighting means, as well as access to sports and recreational activities for Balad communities through the purchase of the firefighting truck, and construction of the first stadium in the district. This will benefit the whole Balad community!
