Every year thousands of children go to school in Somalia but the children from Sahan village of Luuq district, has never had the chance to access formal schools. The small pastoral community, not more than 160 households, is characterized with low income and mostly live under the poverty line hence, cannot afford to send their children to study elsewhere.
Each year, the number of school age children is dramatically on the increase with no hope of bringing school at home. The community leaders contacted the district administration however they couldn’t afford to build school. Moreover, some children would walk more than five miles to attend school in the nearest town, Luuq. One group of children had a particularly long and treacherous journey, yet the tiniest students would continue to faithfully walk every day. They have to cross the river every day. Fortunately, earlier this year, they have learnt the DIALOGUE project and today the community members believe it is the beginning of a miracle, the establishment of the first school in the village. The DIALOGUE project is a resource mobilization initiative by DRC that contributes 50% of the total cost of community and public project to create trust between Somali people and their government in the management of their own development.
